Loss of KAM Power — Open Circuit
2000-2003 Ford Excursion 7.3L V8 Power Stroke Diesel
Description
The PCM has detected a loss of Keep Alive Memory (KAM) power. The KAM circuit maintains battery voltage to the PCM to preserve adaptive learning values, fuel trim data, and DTC history when the engine is off.
Symptoms
- Check Engine Light
- Poor idle after battery reconnect
- Transmission shifting harshly initially
- Loss of stored DTCs
- Fuel economy temporarily affected
Common Causes
- Battery recently disconnected
- Blown KAM fuse
- Corroded battery cable or terminal
- Wiring issue in KAM circuit
- Faulty PCM power relay
Diagnostic Steps
- Check KAM fuse
- Inspect battery terminals for corrosion
- Test battery voltage
- Check wiring from battery to PCM KAM circuit
- Verify PCM power relay operation
Repair Notes
Replace blown KAM fuse. Clean battery terminals. Repair wiring. Allow PCM to relearn after fix.
