Loss of KAM Power Circuit Open

1990-1998 Mazda MPV 3.0L V6

Low SeverityPowertrain

Description

The PCM has detected a loss of Keep Alive Memory power. The KAM circuit maintains battery voltage to the PCM to preserve adaptive learning values, fuel trims, and DTC history when the engine is off.

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light
  • Poor idle after battery reconnect
  • Transmission shifts harshly initially
  • Fuel economy temporarily reduced

Common Causes

  • Blown KAM fuse
  • Corroded battery terminal
  • Wiring open in KAM circuit
  • Faulty PCM power relay
  • Battery cable issue

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Check KAM fuse
  2. Inspect battery terminals for corrosion
  3. Test battery voltage
  4. Check wiring from battery to PCM KAM circuit
  5. Verify PCM power relay

Repair Notes

Replace the blown KAM fuse; clean battery terminals; repair wiring in the KAM circuit.
