Automotive Fluid Specification Guide

Why Do Fluid Specifications Matter?

Every vehicle requires specific fluids formulated to protect its engine, transmission, and other systems. Using the wrong oil viscosity, coolant type, or transmission fluid can cause accelerated wear, overheating, seal damage, and voided warranties. Modern vehicles are especially sensitive to fluid specifications.

Engine Oil Basics

  • Viscosity (e.g., 0W-20): The first number is cold flow, the second is hot. Lower numbers = thinner oil.
  • API Rating (e.g., SP): American Petroleum Institute service category. Newer is backward-compatible.
  • OEM Specs: Some manufacturers require proprietary specs (BMW LL-01, Mercedes 229.5, VW 502.00).

Common Fluid Systems

  • Engine Oil: Most critical fluid. Manufacturer-specific viscosity and spec required.
  • Transmission Fluid: ATF type varies by manufacturer (Dexron, WS, DW-1, ATF+4).
  • Coolant: Color-coded by type. Never mix different coolant chemistries.
  • Brake Fluid: DOT 3, DOT 4, or DOT 5.1. Absorbs moisture over time.

Community-Verified Data

Our fluid specifications are estimated from manufacturer patterns and refined by community contributions. If you notice an incorrect spec, use the correction form on any fluid detail page to submit accurate data. All submissions are reviewed before being applied.
